2019 “FLTRP ETIC Cup” National English Speech Contest (Jiangsu District) Held in JSOU

On November 7 to 9, the 2019 “FLTRP. ETIC Cup” National English Speech Contest (Jiangsu District) was held in JSOU. 188 contestants from 63 vocational colleges in Jiangsu competed and displayed their talent on the stage.

At the opening ceremony, Zhang Xiao, vice president of JSOU delivered a welcome speech to all the judges, contestants and their instructors, and wished the contestants to achieve their goals. She said that language is not only a tool for communication, but a reflection of specific culture, way of thinking and social systems. She encouraged students to learn English well and vocalize the Chinese story. Xu Qing, deputy director of Vocational Education Department of Jiangsu Education Department, Wang Jianping, director of East China Information Center of FLTRP, and professor Hu Yonghui, general secretary of Foreign Language Teaching and Research Association of Jiangsu Colleges and Universities, delivered speeches respectively.

Selected by participating schools, contestants competed in semifinal and final contest in two days. There were three venues for semifinal, and each had a panel of nine judges and a question master. The contestants were required to give a prepared three-minute speech entitled “My Big Story in 2049” and answered the question raised by question master in one minute. In the final, each contestant made a 3 minutes’ impromptu speech subject to the topic they drew on site, and 1-minute answer to the questions raised by the judges. After a fierce competition, three students, Lu Qinyin, Tang Na and Ding Linlin from Changzhou and Nantong won the special prize, and will compete in the national finals as representatives of Jiangsu. In addition, 19 students won the first prize, 46 won the second and 82 the third. Two students from Wuzhong branch school of JSOU won the first prize.
