On March 12th, Professor Bie Dunrong, Director of Institute of Education, Xiamen University, was invited to give a special academic report on “Deep Thinking of the Development of Higher Continuing Education” at JSOU. Vice President Wu Guanglin attended the seminar along with more than 50 college deans, heads of functional departments, and educational researchers. The seminar was presided over by Ji He, Dean of the Academy of Educational Sciences.

On the seminar, Professor Bie reflected on and discussed the theoretical problems of higher continuing education from nine aspects: attribute, function, organization, knowledge production mode, theoretical teaching, the relationship between work and study, the particularity of students, the particularity of teachers, and the particularity of academic degree and diploma. He said that higher continuing education should have the dual attributes belonging to both national education system and non-national education system, and have the compensatory and developmental functions to higher education. Its knowledge production mode should shift more to innovative and applied knowledge production activities. The teaching mode should focus on the combination of theory and practice, and coordinate the contradictions and conflicts between learners’ work and study in terms of time, content, and way of thinking. Professor Bie also interacted and exchanged views with teachers from our university on the complete credit system of higher continuing education, the construction of curriculum system, and the development of teaching staff.

Vice President Wu Guanglin concluded by speaking highly of Professor Bie’s academic report as a profound, wonderful, and very instructive one. On behalf of the university, he expressed his heartfelt thanks to Professor Bie for his long-term care and support for our development. Focusing on the running of JSOU, Vice President Wu put forward four aspects of thinking: to handle the relationship between standardization and flexibility in running higher continuing education, highlight adaptability, and improve supply capacity; to handle the relationship between academic education and non-academic education, promote the development of non-academic education, and serve the people of Jiangsu; to deal with the problems of application, inheritance, and innovation in the teaching of higher continuing education; to continue to deepen the reform of talent training mode, build a training system of “complete credit system + curriculum system construction + teaching form innovation + information technology improvement”, and build a “double-qualified” team of teachers that can smoothly combine theory with practice.
