Research at Shanghai Theatre Academy by Teachers of Image Art Department

On April 13, 2023, Xia Xuemin, He Yu and Zhao Yuqin, teachers from the Image Art Department of the School of Art, went to Shanghai Theatre Academy for professional research.

The Stage Art Department of Shanghai Theatre Academy is holding a leading position in academic learning, teaching, scientific research, design and creation with multiple awards and prizes conferred to teachers for their excellent works. After being specially funded for three consecutive years, and in 2012, the program of Drama, Film and Television Art Design was included in the pilot projects of professional comprehensive reform of the Ministry of Education.

Professor Yi Tianfu, director of the Department of Stage Design, shared their rich experience and complete teaching system accumulated in the long-term teaching process. Our teachers also introduced the history, enrollment scale and teaching mode. Both sides shared opinions on how to keep up with the development of the times and reform and innovate the teaching contents and methods. Fan Congbo, the director of the Costume Teaching and Research Section, and Shen Qian, the stage lighting design teacher, showed the audience around their field-training building, the student practice theater and other places. In the teaching reform, the department carries forward the comprehensive concept of big drama, integrates it with directing, acting, hosting and other majors. Students of various majors cooperate with each other and perform their own duties. From behind the scenes to in front of the stage, from rehearsal to performance, they can participate in the real working scene. Fan Congbo also introduced their teaching method named coloring adopted since 2002, which means, to expand the character modelling by creating a multi-dimensional character modelling show space. Focusing on coloring, the teachers have developed a great deal of teaching practice, basic and advanced, which has not only improved the teaching quality, but also promoted new ideas in teaching.
