During the summer break, Jiangsu Open University (JSOU) successfully upgraded 107 classrooms into smart learning spaces, marking a major step in the university’s digital transformation and quality development in education. The project not only refreshed the physical teaching environment but also introduced technical enhancements that support innovation in teaching methods, management systems, and the overall learning ecosystem.
Building Smart, Student-Centered Learning Environments
The renovation was guided by the vision of “digital intelligence empowering education,” integrating student-centered teaching philosophy with modern technology to create functional, humane, and tech-enhanced classrooms.
Each room is now equipped with an AI-powered recording and broadcasting system. These tools help transcend the limitations of time and space in traditional teaching and enable more interactive and resource-rich instruction.
Coordinated Implementation with Teaching Needs at the Core
The university treated the smart classroom initiative as a key project for improving teaching conditions. A Digital Innovation Teaching Project Team was established, led by Vice President Geng Huantong, and included the Academic Affairs Office, Logistics Management Office, Digital Construction Center, Security Office, and Asset Management Office (Bidding Office).
During implementation, Vice President Geng inspected construction sites at Yingtian and Dinghuaimen East campuses weekly, overseeing quality, safety, environmental standards, and timelines. All 103 standard smart classrooms and four interactive seminar rooms were completed on schedule, ready for the new semester.
Promoting Teaching Innovation Through Smart Technology
To ensure the smart classrooms are used effectively, the Academic Affairs Office organized training sessions for nearly 500 faculty members before the semester began. These covered device operation, recording systems, and smart class monitoring, combining theory, demos, and hands-on practice.
In addition, a smart class observation system powered by AI analytics enables digital supervision and data-driven evaluation—shifting classroom assessment from experience-based to evidence-based approaches.
The completion of this project represents a key milestone in JSOU’s digital teaching transformation and its broader effort to build a smart, innovative university. As an institution committed to lifelong education, JSOU will continue to deepen the application of smart teaching tools and accelerate the development of a diverse, personalized, and intelligent educational ecosystem.
