On the afternoon of October 22, the lecture hall at Jiangsu Open University’s Dinghuaimen Campus was filled to capacity for the launch of the Everlasting Excellence master craftsman lecture series, hosted by the Student Affairs Office and organized by the School of Information Engineering. Hu Sheng, a senior technician with 30 years of hands-on experience at the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation’s 14th Research Institute and acclaimed CCTV Master Craftsman of the Year, was appointed as an Industry Professor and delivered an inspiring lecture blending technical mastery with profound ideological insight. Members of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice Presidents Geng Huantong and Hang Zhuhong attended the event.

As head of a national-level master craftsman studio, Hu Sheng has led his team in overcoming more than 30 technical challenges, driving over 150 innovations that generated economic benefits exceeding 20 million yuan. His ethos—craftsmanship lies in the millimeter detail—perfectly aligns with the university’s mission of cultivating highly skilled professionals. During the event, the university formally appointed Hu Sheng as Industry Professor and inaugurated the Master Craftsman Studio on campus.

In his keynote lecture, Hu shared his remarkable journey—from vocational high school graduate to national CNC skills champion, and now a pivotal figure in China's defense equipment development. Drawing from real-world cases in airborne and naval radar component manufacturing, he illustrated the essence of craftsmanship. One defining moment: a painstaking 45-day workshop stint refining CNC tool parameters to achieve a groundbreaking precision of 0.005 mm, enabling domestic breakthroughs in military hardware production. Nearly a thousand freshmen across disciplines listened intently, witnessing firsthand the power of perseverance. Master foundational skills until they become muscle memory, Hu urged, recounting how his trainees secured top rankings in national and provincial competitions. Tackle challenges one by one—you too can become industry pillars. His plainspoken wisdom resonated deeply, with students scribbling key takeaways—dedication, continuous refinement—into their notebooks.

During the lively Q&A session, students eagerly sought guidance: How should vocational students chart their growth paths? Which matters more—specialized skills or core competencies? Hu emphasized lifelong learning—solid theoretical grounding during student years, complemented by hands-on adaptability in the workplace. Beyond technical prowess, he stressed physical endurance, resilience, intellectual humility, and teamwork as the cornerstones of sustained excellence. This special lecture illuminated what 'serving the nation through skill' truly means, one student reflected, It has crystallized my aspirations.

The university will leverage this event to deepen its Industry Professor + Training Base + Specialized Curriculum talent-development model, integrating exemplary craftsmanship into every facet of education. By channeling industry expertise directly into classrooms, the initiative plants the seeds of patriotic dedication in young minds—nurturing the next generation of master artisans who will propel China’s manufacturing prowess forward.
