On July 16, the inauguration ceremony of the Jiangsu Senior University of Science and Technology was held in Nanjing. The event was attended by representatives from the Jiangsu Association for Science and Technology, the Jiangsu Association of Senior Scientists and Technologists, Jiangsu Open University (JSOU), Xinhua Daily, China Mobile Jiangsu, and other organizations, along with experts, students, and enterprise representatives.
The university is a provincial public science education platform guided by the Jiangsu Association for Science and Technology and co-established by the School of Aging Development of JSOU and the Jiangsu Science Communication Center. It will coordinate with 75 senior universities of science and technology across the province to deliver courses on scientific knowledge, digital skills, and health services for older adults.
At the ceremony, Xia Jun, Vice Chairman of the Jiangsu Association for Science and Technology, noted that improving scientific literacy among seniors supports both social governance and national scientific development. He cited recent national initiatives promoting science education for older adults and emphasized the new university’s role in advancing these efforts.
The university will build a professional teaching team by drawing instructors from partner institutions. At the event, appointments were presented to the first group of experts from organizations including the Jiangsu Association of the Integration of Traditional and Western Medicine, JSOU, the Jiangsu Performing Arts Group, and Jiangsu Provincial People’s Hospital. A university committee was also established to oversee operations. Following the ceremony, Professor Huang Yabo, Vice President of the Jiangsu Association of Integrative Medicine, delivered a health-themed lecture.
The collaboration between JSOU’s School of Aging Development and the Jiangsu Science Communication Center marks an expansion of the university’s senior education outreach. The new institution aims to integrate resources in senior science education and health services, create a mainstream health communication and science education platform, and support the development of senior education in Jiangsu.
